About Tallow

What is tallow anyway?

Beef suet! Yes, really, the fat from around the kidneys of a cow. Nowadays it’s better known as tallow, but traditionally recognized as "ossewit". It is a natural, animal fat from the suet layer of cattle. Back in the day, this fat was a total all-rounder in every household. For cooking, making candles, skincare, or greasing a squeaky hinge: tallow did it all.

Years of marketing have wrongly conditioned us to accept industrial oils and chemical-filled skincare. Thankfully, we are seeing a massive revival of traditional fats like beef suet.

Why? Because it works. It works incredibly well. Tallow naturally contains vitamins A, D, E, and K. Its fatty acid profile is almost identical to the lipid structure of our own skin. This allows it to bring your skin back into balance instead of throwing it off. That is something even "innocent" plant oils can easily do, thanks to the toxins and acids plants produce to protect themselves. After all, plants have no teeth and no legs, so they have to defend themselves somehow.

Beasty Balms uses 100% grass-fed beef tallow from grazers in Dutch nature reserves. This is respectful to the animal and gives your skin the nourishment it deserves, straight from our own soil.

The Beasty cattle: pure nature in the Netherlands

The origin of a product determines its quality. At Beasty Balms, the fat comes from Angus, Highlander, and Limousin cattle grazing in mixed herds. They live just like they would in the wild, with calves, mothers, bulls, and even bachelor groups.

These cattle are 100% grass-fed and grass-finished on diverse, natural soil. They live in protected areas where no pesticides are sprayed. They are never fed grain or soy, and they never see antibiotics or growth hormones.

These animals aren't kept for mass-market meat. Their natural lifestyle creates a much purer fat profile. Occasionally, culling is necessary to keep the herd in balance. What others might see as "waste," Beasty Balms turns into a premium product. We believe in using the whole animal with respect. This fits our vision of local living, circular thinking, and honoring the animal. What remains is not thrown away but used to make the best nourishing balms possible.

Why on earth rub beef fat on your face?

It might sound strange to smear animal fat on your face, but it is anything but gross. Tallow is intensely nourishing. It is rich in fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), packed with omega-3 and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), and it is non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog your pores.

It is perfect for sensitive skin and eczema. We add organic jojoba oil to whip the fat into a soft, airy balm that absorbs easily. With the addition of organic extracts or essential oils (or the unscented versions), you get a natural skincare product without the junk. Tallow is much closer to our own skin lipids than plant oils are. No wonder it works so well.

Society loves pushing us toward extremes. Keto, vegan, breatharian, influencers, or reiki - we all hunt for a holy grail that might give a moment of relief but rarely lasts. Beasty isn't a holy grail. It’s just a very good jar of fat. Fat that restores, feeds, and regulates without being greasy.

Beasty Balms is honest, pure, and comes with a wink. We are extremely honest about our product because we have nothing to hide, and deception already causes enough misery in the world. Your face, your decision.

You can definitely make this yourself. But if you don’t have the time or the desire to do the work, Beasty Balms does it for you with love and craftsmanship.
